I own a '97 8100 and it was the first year for the 8.1. It seems to me that there was some sort of emissions standards that Deere gave as the reason for the switch, can't remember for sure. As John states, there is nothing to shy away from in the 7.6, a very solid engine used in lots o models. Can't add anything about trans updates, mine seems to shift OK. Neighbor has a '96 model, we are both very happy with our respective tractors.
