We're still running the old 863 yet on a 1680 and as far as I know we've never touched the gearboxes, so I would say that theres something wrong. I wish I could be more help but I don't know alot about those heads but my dad does so I can ask him about if you'd like.
They were a really well built head back in the day with the exception of the brass stalk roll bearings, if we don't grease those things every 10 to 15 acres or let them run dry, you might as well plan on replacing them for next year. Those heads sure are heavy too.
