Well, the wide spacing is more for longevity of the crop than anything. It will become root bound sooner the closer spaced it is. But closer spacing increases the yield the first 2 years. There is till an enormous amount of experimenting to do and knowledge to gain about grass seed production. If you have any ideas, dont be afraid to try them.

We try to plant in the fall if possible to get a half yield the next summer at least. Planting in the spring gets no return that year. It is however a better bet for a successfull establishment in the spring. It's just a matter of the year and the weather and if you can get a contract or not that you like. If you grow non-certified seed without a contract, you can do pretty much whatever you want. But certified seed, you have to jump through the hoops as they say.

Slugs and bugs are the biggest enemy of the grass in the fall here. Winter kill can happen on late planted stuff, but as a rule winters here dont get cold enough long enough to hurt much.
