Attackers these days are typically after money. Maybe that's transferring it directly from your account to theirs, or buying stuff shipped to them using your credit card, or encrypting your data and charging a ransom to regain access to it. For a typical home user, there usually isn't enough financial incentive to attack you. But never say never.

The more out-of-date a device is, the more well known the vulnerabilities are. It could be as simple as going to a website and that device is now able to be remotely controlled. For a scammer, if they have access to a device on your private network, it's much easier to get access to other devices on that same network. Usually that requires additional security issues on the other devices, but it's 1000x easier than getting through a firewall.

Usually with larger networks that get compromised, the attack vector is to gain access to one desktop computer (someone installs some software after clicking a link in a bad e-mail). From there they go after the servers and other high value targets within the network.

Multi-factor authentication ensures that someone can't login with just your username/password. However, if they're able to watch your screen while you log in to your bank account, maybe that's enough for them to see your account numbers.
