Well I don't consider ND to be a warm climate I guess.......and it is absolutely impossible to make a blanket statement like you did I don't care where you are, way too many variables.......worst corn we ever raised was planted 1" deep, haven't made that mistake again
From my way of thinking, your 1" seed never got to enough moisture.
That's why I say, "plant to moisture."
