got it figured out, i had to low level format my pen drive then go back and format it to fat32, I'm assuming now NTFS or FATex would have worked as well. this can be done using the diskpart command on windows, selecting the "disk" and then doing a "clean all" command. This video does a good job of showing how it's done.
