| We do something similar with older cows that aren't in good enough shape to go with the rest of the aged out cows in the fall. Sell the opens later winter after they put on some condition and keep the breds with heifers and use their calves to graft on heifers that lose a calf. Usually they're all gone by branding time but might end up having to run a few another summer.
