Subject: RE: TerraStar Unlock Transfer

Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The enclosure on the 6500 is two pieces of plastic that are glued together to make a water-tight and air-tight seal. There is no way to open it up without destroying the enclosure. They need to be sealed that well so that moisture doesn't get inside. Even changes in atmospheric pressure could allow humid air in, and given enough time, will condense into droplets and cause corrosion internally. Any crack in the enclosure will eventually be an issue. The next generation went to an enclosure that is screwed together with an o-ring between the two halves, which makes them more serviceable.

I have sent a couple receivers in for warranty repair to NovAtel (they make the 6500 hardware) and they open it up, throw away the old enclosure, repair whatever is inside, and put it in a new enclosure. If the receiver card was bad, they would put in a new receiver card and transfer the unlocks to the new card. Note that this was when they were under warranty. If the manufacturer is in possession of the old card, they know for sure it's not going to be used. There is no way to permanently remove an unlock from a NovAtel receiver card, so they won't "transfer" the unlock to a new receiver, because it's still functional on the old receiver. They have no way to know for sure that the card has failed and is unusable.

The 6500 has been out of production long enough now that I don't believe NovAtel is offering repair services on them any more.

Maybe they have a trade-in program that the bad receiver could be used on?
