Northwest Illinois | If we get too deep cleaning drainage ditches, we will get into gray clay. Here, along the ditches is always the highest yield of these fields and I’d say 1 out of 4 scoops will have some form of blue or gray clay. It’s mixed in with dark black top soil and black silt from the ditch and not just a pile of it. When it dries and is worked, the area along the ditches will have a grey ish dust. The ditches were originally dug years ago and were in the gray clay to insure depth, so it’s been piled in the same spot for years. I have spread out with a dozer, manure spreader and rotary ditcher, but for the most part the majority of it remains 60’ from Ditch. I was always going to take a soil sample of the grey blue clay to see how nasty it is but never have. I wouldn’t want to farm just the clay, but haven’t been afraid to mix it in “here” over the years essentially only judging it from appearance, texture, and yield of ditch spoil areas with gray clay. | |
