Sunburst Montana

silverluv75 - 3/7/2024 22:24 With current prices and crop insurance revenues who is all switching over to Durum from Wheat? I have been growing durum the last few years and have had good luck with it. Thinking growing more and less wheat do to crop insurance prices. Market on current Durum has slipped quite a bit so must be alot out there or maybe anticipating alot of acres going?

First of all I hope the rest of you guys in this thread keep backing off of durum. Over in north central MT we have Generous Mills to sell durum to.  Since it is an actual mill their prices are usually $.50 to a dollar higher than all the regular elevator prices. Plus we contract to Pasta Montana who has GM do the milling for them.  Their prices fluctuate too but we had durum contracted for $12.5 last year and this year with them. Been growing durum for over 30 years and very very rarely has it been worth less than wheat.  Even the open market durum at GM was $10 this year.  We are forced to grow Alzada and it will yield with all the spring wheat varieties we have grow so far.  Keeps its color too a lot better the the old varieties.  We always put in around 1,200 acres every year.
