Everyone here has good ideas, and I agree it's just a fact of life with gravel drives in the upper midwest when the frost comes out.

One thing I wonder on our lot, and it looks the same on yours is if we're "fixing" the ruts by dragging around the fines and dust when it's nice out, which makes us feel good and looks great but we're just moving the fine granular material around that turns into "mush" when wet. It would probably be best to scarify a bit, grade then pack a few times a year or in the fall. Something to bring the larger aggregate back to the surface?

And I do think if you can get out there on the frost in the morning and backdrag it smooth it does help this time of year, the water sitting in those wheel ruts seems to perc down and turn the whole base soft if you let it.

Probably not going to accomplish much if it's too soft though.
