Eastern NE KS | Talking both sides of the coin.
My vet's alley is solid sheet to about 4' high with over head no backs to hold them in the alley. If you where planning to use a manual pipe to stop backing, slots are much easier to use than a hole; Near side is easy, no so on the far side hitting a 3" hole.
Any gap you leave can be easily filled with steel strap. So, if you go with a gap, its not exactly permanent.
My alley is an old WW design, 2 solid wood 2x12 stacked up with no gap. Everything is framed with 2 to 2.5" tubing. So a leg will come outside over the top of the low solid wall but has never hurt an animal because it's all rounded. This is not true at the edge of a guard rail. I look forward to reading ideas of safe placement of guard rail in high pressure/stress use. | |
