I've got a friend who's convinced that this is an inside job/ sabotage. Which got me thinking about how that might work. I've seen a couple of videos explaining how it all makes sense based on the power supply shutting off. In my mind that immediately brings up the possibility of a cyber attack, the less sinister explanation would be that when in port the oil was drained and either not refilled or a hose wasn't connected, so the engine ran dry. Does anybody here know enough about marine diesels to say whether that's plausible?

You realize these massive main engines on this size of ship hardly has an oil pan as you think. They have huge tanks probably measuring the oil in tons. And I doubt they even change the oil during the engines life.
