Well we don't know for certain that it was a mutated version. That's the problem. In a lab obviously scientists are using different means to mutate the rna sequence. The difference between the Sars cov2 and wild varients was only a few nucleotides. It's nearly impossible to say how it happened.

The know part is that it originated in bat's and disease like this will continue to come from bats must be researched. How do you propose to stay ahead of natural mutations without these labs?

We may never know if it was from wild bats. From infected bats that escaped from transport to the facility. From an accidentally infected researcher with wild Sars cov2. From an accidentally infected researcher with mutated Sars cov2. Or if it was a purposefully released.
