Mostly it is pulverized to a dust making it more soluble,
This allows it to percolate deeper into the soil profile,
Allowing the calcium to do its thing deeper in the soil.
Also it is also bonded to sulfur, to the point of saturation, which limits its ability to bond to the soil.
This also allows the Gypsum to move deeper into the soil profile.
