Subject: RE: Best time to calve

We had mud here all winter including February, I start 1st of April, but never as many as this year, 6 today brings total to 14 already, 2 sets of those blessed twins, one of which may get a ride to the sale barn tomorrow, not going to try and get a cow to take care of 2 calves in this crap. After one crappy year I backed it up to the 10th, could see the difference in the calves that fall and I realized in the crappy years a week or two does not seem to make it much better most of the time. Advantage of April over February is longer daylight, I do not check cows after dark unless I am darn sure there is a reason to, most years 1 or 2 times is it. This all being said when this crap hits it makes me think of fall calving starting about the 20th or so of August. Major reason not to is our farm is cold, very little cover, we bal;e graze and feed 100% hay in the winter not sure how cows would do under those circumstances.
