I think you are on the right track. For our honeymoon we went south to Texas and loved it. But Colorado became our main love as far as vacation spots, so on the 25th anniversary we went and rented a little cabin in the mountains and left the kids at home. Less than $1000 spent and we still talk about the fun we had doing sightseeing in places we hadn't explored yet.
