| Feed grade soybean varieties can be prepared like edamame but will not taste the same as a edamame bean.
For good quality edamame, you need an edamame bean variety.
My family in Maryland has grown (for home consumption) an edamame bean called "Butterbeans" for almost 30 years.

We would sit around and shell these beans as a family activity when I was a kid... we normally ate them mixed with cut corn as a succotash.
We called them vegetable soybeans... didn't learn the word edamame until about 10 years ago.
