SE Nebraska | Not a dumb question at all.
Poly phosphates are longer chains of phosphates, orthos are a single phosphate molecule. Poly's are more expensive to produce (they take more energy; they're basically orthos that have been heated to remove more water). Polys turn to ortho phosphates when they hit soil moisture. 10-34-0 is close to 60% poly and 40% ortho if I remember correctly. Regardless of form, both types are equal in plant availabilty, meaning that to the plant, a lb of P is a lb of P, regardless of where they came from. The only difference I know is that polys have a greater abilty to dissolve some salts, allowing for better compatibility.
Hope that helps. I could easily stand corrected. | |
