Everyone used to pick twice, second time called scrapping. It was done because there were still unopened bolls when you picked the first time, and after they opened up, you picked again.
Now there are boll openers that are put in with the defoliants to make the green bolls mature and open, so that it can be picked only once. With the price of fuel and labor, it isn't feasible to do it more than once.
