I presume you have a good no-till drill. If so, you can probably get good seed to soil placement at a proper depth. How do you cut cotton stalks? A vertical flail mower will distribute residue much more uniformly, and, while not the norm, are becoming popular down here. I am not as scared of getting a stand, again, using a no-till drill, as I am of compaction down here. Where we don't have a no-till drill available, we are looking at adjusting our disks to work the soil enough to get some "fluffed" and available for a regular drill right behind it, but still to leave as much residue as possible on the surface, probably about 35-40% only.
