If the goal is to set the record, production costs are not really relevant. 

You don't worry about fuel efficiency on the tractor pull track.  

You don't worry about tire life or fuel efficiency on the autocross track.   

You really don't worry about cost in most any competition endeavor, unless you intend to lose.
