Subject: RE: Insight Direct Command in a Patriot SPX3185?? Ted/Tom???

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I'm not certain as to the Boom Switch wiring on that particular model. The Boom switch wiring on the original machine is a factor when installing a Direct Command system.

Confusion comes with the fact that with a Direct Command system or anybody's auto swath system, that the boom switches (no matter where they are) need to be inputs to the system and MUST NOT control the boom valves directly. The boom valves are controlled by the Liquid Control module. So again the switches are inputs to the system and the LCM actually opens/closes the valves. When you have a boom switch ON you are merely giving the system "permission" to turn that section ON if it sees fit.

On systems that had a Raven 440 or 450 where the boom switches on the Raven console were used, there really isn't a problem. When the Raven is removed and put on the shelf, the boom switches are there also and thus do not cause a problem. A switch box (110 or equivalent) is used as the input to the Auxiliary Input module to handle the "permission giving" that I mention above. The AIM is connected by a CAN connection to the LCM. Thus if you have a section ON and the system feels that the area under the boom needs to be sprayed, the LCM will open the appropriate boom valve.

Those setups are very easy to work with since Ag Leader makes a cable that goes to the Insight, AIM and LCM and ends with a 16 Pin connector like the back of a Raven 440 or 450. We have many customers who have that wiring harness and those modules in a toolbox and can easily swap back and forth from the Raven to the Direct Command.

On sprayers that used a Raven 460 or 660, the wiring can get more confusing. In these sprayers, the OEM has boom switches of their own in a Joystick, Command arm or on the side of the seat. Usually these switches were wired to run the boom valves directly and also backfeed so to speak to the Raven console. Thus when a boom switch is turned ON, electricity flows two ways - to the boom valve itself and to the Raven console. The problem here is that if the boom switch is ON, Direct Command has no way of taking control and turning the boom OFF when that area has already been sprayed.

On these sprayers, the customer usually wants to use the original switches rather than install another switch box. They usually also want to return to the previous setup (like you) for times when the Insight is not available or when they trade the sprayer off.

Ag Leader has kits for many Self-Propelled sprayers. We have made special cables for other situations.

On some models it is fairly easy to make a tee in the original wiring without doing any cutting. This often means creating a special tee that goes in between the wiring iconnectors from the cab to the rear of the sprayer. If all the wires regarding the control circuit, flowmeter and boom valves are together in one connector, it is usally possible to make a tee that reroutes the boom valve signals to the AIM and the output from the LCM to the valves. This is a good situation and allows for an easy transfer back to the original arrangement.

Concerning your questions about having to use the 110 for Auto Swath. The fact that you want to use Auto Swath is secondary. The main problem is to get whatever switches you use to be inputs only to the AIM. The ouput from the LCM runs the boom valves whether you use the auto swath feature or not.

The fact that you are going to use a Trimble NavII with the Insight has no bearing on the sprayer control part. The NavII is actually steering the rig and the Insight is your user interface to the Nav II.
