Southeast MN | Not exactly the same models but I remember when Dad upgraged from a 3800 to a 3960. Night and day difference, but the local JD dealer said that the 3800 was the worst one deere made. The cutterhead on the 3960 was much nicer, produced a more uniform cut than the 6 knife with screen in the 3800 and there was no long stringy hay to build up on the auger support just before the fan.
Agree with the others on any chopper, keep the fan blade corners sharp and the clearance setup. I would use two pennies, one under each corner of the paddle, then tighten it down. A penny makes a good shim and is thicker than a dime and thinner than nickel.
The heads interchanged; but one had the slip clutch on the head the other on the base unit and don't remember which way it was. I think the newer ones had the clutch on the pickup heads. | |
