I wire brushed mine, and after I got them back on, I sprayed that Fluid Film on them. Used it also on the oil pan, since they're known to rust. Caught mine with a couple of blisters on it, but no leaks so far. I just used silicone to seal the covers; grabbed that clear stuff off the shelf at the shop (JD). OD
