I had the same problem many years ago. I laid the verticle auger over on its side at about a 45 degree angle and supported the discharge end with two steel posts on each side, just high enough to get into an auger boot. I squirt a little oil on the bearings while i'm using it. I've had no problems since. It seems like I don't get the moisture in in that right angle gear box anymore. I've also noticed that the formerly verticle auger flighting lasts a lot longer now.
