Soybeans I do know a little about. Maturity of a soybean is determined by day length. Ed's post covers this pretty well. The short of it is if you plant the same maturity group at different dates the difference in time of maturity will be far far less then the difference in planting date. Plant group III beans here in SE KS and they will harvest about the middle of September. If you plant them in May they will have a pretty good growing period and can do well, but if you plant them in mid July they won't amount to much, but they'll still harvest pretty early. Plant group V in May and they will probably harvest in late October. Plant them in July and they will harvest in early November. The bottom line is that to get early harvest you have to use short maturity varieties but to get decent yields from them you have to plant early. To plant late and get decent yield you need a late maturity variety. | |
