Subject: Ford 8630 steering

This tractor we have owned since new. When we first took delivery, the steering was very difficult. You could crank on the steering wheel hard to barely move the front wheels. At times, it would lock up. This was most prevelant at low rpms. The dealer replaced the steering column, which seemed to solve the issues. Now at approx 4000 hrs, This tractor is now doing the same thing.
Is this common ? Is the column a symptom of some other issue or problem?
All the other tractor colors we have owned have never had steering problems.
I do know these tractors do not have the greatest reputation with some members here on this sight.
I am interested in learning what to do to correct this problem, not trade off the machine.
Are the columns hard to rebuild ? Are boneyard replacements reliable for this machine, or should I bite the bullet and get a new one?
Any other fixes out there some one knows of?
TIA
