Subject: RE: synthetic oils

Culbertson, MT
I have been running synthetic oil in several vehicles the past 3-4 years. '94 Ford Powerstroke, 5W-40 Rotella syn, no problems, 5K miles, change filter and another 5K, analysis shows OK. '02 Chevy Duramax, same oil, same deal but this engine uses some oil so will be changing the pattern to see what's what although analysis shows all OK. Wife's Yukon XL and mom's Durango both get Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic on approximately 15-20K. Again, oil analysis shows OK and could go further but I'm at my level of comfort for now.

Still running conventional oils in the tractors but am going to start oil testing on these to see how things are going. I use JD 15W40 on the extended change interval.

All said, there seems to be no difference in the gassers. The diesels start better in cold weather, especially the Powerstroke. If you fiddle around with extended drain intervals, DO THE TESTING!
