Subject: timing IH DT466 engine in truck

Southern Illinois

Where do you find timing marks on this engine? I pulled the injection pump yesterday. I did turn the engine untill the notch on the pump hub was aligned with the pointer on the pump so as long as the engine doesn't turn I should be good to reinstall the pump, but just where do you find the marks to check the engine static timing?

On the bellhousing adapter, on the left side of the engine above the starter I removed a cover leaving about a 2" open hole. As far as I can tell there is no timing marks on the flywheel surface in that area. There is also a small sight hole directly at the bottom of the bellhousing adapter but there does not appear to be marks there either.

Here's the other thing, a couple of years ago I had the trans out and replaced the flywheel with a new aftermarket one while changing out the clutch. I did not pay attention as to whether there were any marks stamped onto this flywheel when I put it in.
