These engines require a degree of timing that is set on a "BTDC" before top dead center setting. If you timed the pump to the pointer it should be close to right or it could be 180 degrees off. Check the damper on the front of the crank, The timing numbers will be on the top edge of the V that the belt closest to the engine runs in. You will need to get the correct BTDC numbers to be sure.
