Subject: Swather speeds

Rivers, MB
We've been contemplating a swather change on our farm. Currently run a '85 and '87 JD 2360 gas engine swathers with 30' headers. We swath primarly canola and a little bit of wheat every year. Our swathers are getting to the point where the repairs and maintenance are making them unreliable in season. Thinking about going to one newer swather. What kind of speeds are you able to travel when swathing canola. Open to newer JD (4890/4895) or MacDon's. Our canola typically yields 25-45 bu/ac. We're typically able to swath around 4-5 mph. We're hearing guys talk about swathing at 7-9 mph with some of the new swathers and still lay a nice swath. Are any of you finding this? If this is true, we are open to trading up. We don't mind having 2 swathers because it allows us to go out when we can't be combining and get a fair bit swathed in a short time, but if we can get almost the same productivity out of 1 newer one, than we would gladly just run one swather. Any thoughts or experience to share.

TIA
