Subject: RE: corn and some questions

The general rule is corn reaches its highest potential at 86 degrees. (that is why heat units stop counting above 86) With that being said corn can normally tolerate a little high temperatures without seeing a negative impact, but anything over 90 is considered determental to yield. We can stand some dry weather, if it does not get too hot, but too hot even with good moisture will still cut yield. Unfortanately we usually get HOT and DRY. My personal observation from 20 years of tracking weather data and comparing it to yield has shown heat early is not as bad as heat later. Again it normally does not work that way, but it has before. In 1994, 15 of the first 17 days of June were above 90 degrees, then it cooled off and we got rain. The rest of the season was favorable and we went on to have one of the best corn years to date. However, if we would have had that situation in July the yields were have suffer greatly. As you observed different hybrids vary in their ability to take the heat, but the heat you are talking about is tough on corn. I hope it cools down soon for you. As for your question on night time temperature? You bet it makes a difference. Ideally you like to see it cool to below 70 at night. A few nights above 70 degrees may not cut yields noticably, but you sure hate to see them day after day.
