Tim:

About 90% of my soiltest samples are in the high range for Mg. This is grid sampled by soil type. Also, I sort of go along with Kyle Smith's thinking from Beck's hybrids. I wanted high calcuim to improve the "balance--base saturation ratios" of the soil, not just the Ph range. Started using the high cal about 6-7 years ago and have been pleased with the results( yet I have no quantitative anwers for you). I will say it is getting harder to bring the lime up here though. It used to be $14/ton for the high cal delivered. This year $18.60. By now though, I have got most of my ground "fixed" and will be just hitting some problem spots here or there.

As far as Peru lime, I have not tried it as my trucker delivers beans to Decatur and back hauls huntington lime--22%ca/13%Mg-- cheaper than I could get from Peru(at least the last I priced it).

I wish my scanner would work, so I could copy in the Kyle's thoughts in this message. If you want I can snail-mail them to you if you want them.

Let me know!
Here's some guidelines he uses as base sat'ratios
Ca--70-80% Ratio to Calcium
Mg--7-11% 6 or 7 to 1
K--2-3.25% 23 to 1
Na--.75-1% 54 to 1
H--6-10%
