Pittsburg, Kansas

Depends on what part of Kansas you are talking about - it aint all the same. Here in SE Ks 4 years out of 5 we are too wet at least some time during the season for wheat (either fall or spring or both). This year was the one that was not. First time I can remember in my 35 or so years farming that there were significant wheat yield reductions because of dry weather for us. Maybe a little loss because of dry a few times but this year it was DRY. Usually being too wet reduces our wheat yields.

That is why we had problems trying to no-till wheat in corn stubble with lots of residue. It was a wet fall the year we tried it which is somewhat typical for us. Anything that had very good drainage such as side hills the no-till was virtually the same yield as reduced till conventional. Anything where the water couldn't get away was a disaster in no-till and reduced the yields even in the conventional. No-till was up to 20 bpa less. No-till wheat in bean stubble where there is not so much residue is a different story and lots of guys are successful with it.

Central or western Kansas would be more likely wanting to conserve water for wheat. Not SE Ks.

John
