I'm guessing that the yield loss mentioned in the pamphlet is versus spraying earlier. Meaning that the weeds were competeing with the beans for too long.

I imagine the yield loss from not spraying would be far greater than the loss from spraying late, not to mention the seedstock you would produce for the following years.
