Trackframes. How long is too long??

If the drive is on the front and you have a foreign object get caught between a guide roller and the track, it would likely cause less damage if the track is "slack" would'nt it?

Also, say your tank gets airborn..........(it happens). While in the air, the tank slows foward motion, but the tracks get faster as the drivetrain unloads. Now, if the drive is rearward, and the tension idler is foward, when the tank lands there is no place to absorb any energy. But if the drive is foward, and the idler rearward, when the tank lands the idler can momentarily help absorb some of the impact energy and reduce the likelyhood of a track breaking. ???, right?
