Subject: Roundup Ready Crops, how?

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot
So I've read a lot on these forums and others places about RR crops. RR alfalfa is the first one we've been able to grow in this area so it has interested me even more. My question is just how did Monsanto go about making the plants resistant to glyphosate? I know it was though genetic modification, but it couldn't have been like the BT crops where they used existing genetic material. So just what was done? I've not been able to find a good link or explanation yet, everything just says it was a genetic modification. What about the other stuff like Clearfield wheat? I'm sure the actual process is a top notch trade secret, just thinking someone here would have a better general idea of the how.
