Subject: RE: Wheat acres ??

Ilderton, Ontario
It would be common in these parts to do 4-500 acres/machine. the larger guys will do it regularily. We combine 3-500 acres / year. We did 900 this year with a 9550 and a 2366, both with 25' . The weather certainly wasn't co-operative.It takes some management, but is quit attainable. Here are a few rules we go by;
1. never more than 2 days worth of white wheat.
2. grow more than 1 variety with staggered heading dates. Here that is 25R47 and 25R23. May also include hard reds.
3. start combining at 18% moisture. Drying is cheap compared to feed discounts.
4. Fungicide helps keep kernal integrity and straw healthier (standing wheat -good..lodged wheat - bad).
5. hope for good weather. Here, where we are surrounded by lakes it isn't abnormal to get several late day thunder storms through the month of July and August. This year was no exception.

Of the 900 acres harvested this year 20 was downgraded due to sprouts. It was the last 20 acres and received 1 more rain than the rest. That's all it takes
