Subject: RE: Corn, wheat stubble and drought

Kimball, SD
Where lack of summer moisture is a concern corn no-tilled into wheat stubble will always out do corn no-tilled into a full season crop. This is due to water usage the previous year. Using conventional tillage will compound the problem in two ways: first the tillage will waste some of the soil moisture (due to evaportation), second the conventional tilled soil will warm up faster and the corn will take off fast and use more moisture early in the growing season leaving less moisture for the hot/dry mid summer.
