Subject: Re: notill wheat after corn tips

Pittsburg, Kansas

My luck with no-tilling wheat into corn stalks was that as long as the ground drained well or if it was a dry season it did ok. As you know we usually take a yield hit in our area on wheat because of too much moisture at some time during the season (not this year - was dry all along). Seems like no-till just magnified the problem. We had partial field trials in a number of fields and the best no-till was as good as the tilled and the worst was about 20 bpa less. Anywhere too much water was a problem, the no-till was terrible.

We gave it up and like you said, most other guys in our area did also - some a lot more no-till determined than me. One guy has been no-tilling it for a number of years - came by one of his fields just after dark tonight and he was out discing corn stalks.

John
