Near-north Ontario, French River
You have plenty of time. Obviously the earliest after the fly free date is best, but you should be ok planting right up to November 1. OMAF here in Ontario has done some research on planting wheat and they came up with something very interesting, and something that appears to be "true" in the " real world " as well. Its best to plant early ( sept 20-oct 15 or so ) OR plant at the end of the planting window ( oct 25-nov1) . The theory being that earlier planting get a well established plant going that can build root reserves to help it winter better. Planting late allows the plant to establish but use minimal seed reserves for top growth, thus aiding in winter survival. Plant in the MIDDLE of the window and the plant depletes its reserves too much and is more prone to winter injury/kill. If I were you I wouldnt be too concerned yet about planting, HERE the optimum date is said to be Oct 10. For your information Im in Essex Country, 30 minutes from Detroit.
