Ok, sorry, I just now woke up to what you're asking about. The 2-speed shifter! If the rod is moving the lower shift lever into the detent on both ends, that's about all you can ask of adjustment. As I remember, you want to adjust it so the backlash is at a minimum on the 1-3 side. Overshifting will cause the valve to leak oil inside-it's been a while & the book's out in the shop. Anyhow, if the adjustment is OK & it's still not shifting, it's prob. internal in the planetary. 30's had lots of issues w/the planetary, seems there were a few updates, esp. in early tractors. I don't consider myself an 8630 expert, I've just done a lot of work on the couple of 8630's around here...I know we changed the 2-speed once, maybe twice. Something about a long pipe & chain hoist...
