Late as Nov 1 but Oct 1 is better of course and they usually burn down to a nice roundupped looking mass. Last year they lived and one other winter recently, can't remember which one right now. They hold the soil pretty well. We sow a bu to two bu per acre depending out late it is and how much cover we need.
