Subject: RE: Another good thing about strips . . .

SW Saskatchewan
One of our neighbours broke up an old ranch about 20 yrs ago and has used a form of chem fallow(mixed with a bit of tillage) ever since. Caused a scandal when he broke out the fields around obstructions, not following fence lines.

600-1000 acre fields and he has controlled wind erosion but finger gullies are always a problem when you get 2" in 20 min on a solonetzic soil.

He hasn't seemed to have a widespread sawfly problem, now they are always a field edge problem around here but I guess we don't grow enough to support a full fledged fenceline to fenceline infestation.

Starting with the 2002 drought, sawfly has started to move north into the moister areas of the province that never had an infestation before( also no parasites). Looks awful to see a good crop look like it has been hailed, only standing up where a Kochia has supported the plants.

And in those areas they have a good selection of crops to grow, peas, lentils, canola and last of all wheat, used only as a rotation crop.

So I don't know the relation to only wheat and sawfly.

Though in the late 70's, after many years of durum-smf , we had to plant a solid stem to clean up some sandy land that had been farmed in 20 rod strips.
