Subject: RE: Dry nitrate fertilizer

West of Mpls MN about 50 miles on Hwy 12
Back in the late 70's early 80's when Dutch Elm disease killed a bunch of Elm trees that I couldn't wrap my arms around, the contractor that was helping us do some land clearing dropped a few standing Elm trees using a five-gallon pail and ammonium nitrate/diesel fuel mixed in the correct proportions. He had stinger rigged on the blade of his dozer that he would ram under the tree and stuff/pack the pail in the hole. When he set the charge off, first you would see the dirt fly, the tree would rise a little, and then you would hear the boom.
