NW Washington | Ammonium nitrate has been used as an explosive for many years. Just add a little diesel fuel, and you're in business.
Most recently, a big pile of Ammonium nitrate just about wiped out Beirut, Lebanon. A year or two ago, a big explosion was also at a fertilizer storage area in Texas.
I think it was a factor in the big explosion in Halifax, NS, in Canada, in 1917 that killed 1700 or more people.
