Hay Wilson in TX
Posted 9/24/2007 09:36 (#208645)
Subject: No alfalfa hay in 2008 for this fellow.

Little River, TX

The exceptionally wet 2007 has been a disaster for my alfalfa fields. After the second cutting we received numerous floods that covered the fields to one extent or another. The parts that were under water for long periods all drowned. Much of the remaining ground the alfalfa died from a number of root rot diseases.
For roughly 60 days I could not walk on the ground let alone use equipment.
Needless to say the alfalfa fields are now prime weed territory.

It is my plan to put back into alfalfa one patch each fall. I will be wanting to use FD 7, 8, or 9 varieties with good disease & aphid resistance.
I am anxious to see what new listings there are in the 2007-2008 http://alfalfa.org/falldormancy.html.  Maybe some Extra Highly Resistant to PRR.

The grass hay meadows are doing well so all is not a complete loss.
