Gypsum is calcium and sulfate. Adding gypsum will do nothing for your pH levels, but it should increase your calcium levels. Calcium acts as a cation, sulfur as an anion, i.e. working against each other. Most likely the sulfur will react with the magnesium in the soil, produce magnesium sulfate, and leach out. Your calcium level will go up, Mg will go down, but the pH will stay approximately the same.

Gypsum would be good where you already have a good pH level, but your Mg levels are too high compared to your calcium, and you need the extra sulfur. That's, of course, if you're into the whole Ca:Mg ratio theory.
