Subject: Small Framed/Short Calves

I had some red angus calves of my own, and bought some more weaned angus calves this last fall to feed. This is my first time putting them in a dry lot on feed directly after weaning, have only bought yearlings to feed in the past. I am feeding corn and pellets and grass hay.

They have been on feed for a few months now and are gaining well, 940 - 1050 lbs. but there is just one thing that I am unsure on.

The calves (approx 10 months old) seem short and I was told that they won’t add much more height from now on. It seems so weird to me. They don’t look like the yearlings that they almost are and ready to be finished, they just look like fat calves.

I’m wondering where I went wrong, if there is anything I can do to correct it, or if I just need to be more patient with their growth? I don’t really have any experience to compare it to, but for 1,000 lbs they just don’t seem proportionally correct.

Thanks!
